TRINTY COLLEGE STUDY

O'Connor and Ui Neill DNA Sequences Compared to the Participants in this Project

"A recent study conducted at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, found that a striking percentage of men in Ireland (and quite a few in Scotland) share the same Y chromosome, suggesting that the 5th-century warlord known as "Niall of the Nine Hostages" may be the ancestor of 1 in 12 Irishmen. Niall established a dynasty of powerful chieftains that dominated the island for six centuries.  Niall of the Nine Hostages received his name from the taking of hostages as a strategy for playing mental havoc upon his opponent chieftains. He is known in folklore as a raider of the British and French coasts. Supposedly slain in the English Channel or in Scotland, his descendants were the most powerful rulers of Ireland until the 11th century.  Modern surnames tracing their ancestry to Niall include O'Connor". Source: FTDNA website.  There were 9 O'Connor men out of 800 men that participated in the study. The DNA sequences for all 9 O'Connor men are shown in the table below. The location column shows the province these participant's grandfather was from.   The markers in purple are those that FTDNA has indicated are the key differences between the Ui Neill profile and the typical R1b modal value.  Currently, one participant matches 23/25 with the Ui Neill profile.  The table only compares those markers that are part of the FTDNA 37 markers.  It doesn't include the additional markers from Sorenson nor the three markers that are unique to the Trinity Study.
